The Korean government-proposed UNESCO Prize for Global Citizenship Education will be awarded from next year.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Oct. 23 said this was announced at the global agency's executive board meeting in Paris the day before.
Global citizenship education seeks to shape people who widely understand and practice universal human values such as peace, human rights and cultural diversity.
From next year, UNESCO will select for the biennial honor two winners who contribute to the spread of such education each from two categories: 1) youth-led groups and 2) individuals, organizations or non-government organizations. The prize money is USD 50,000 (KRW 70 million).
The UNESCO director general will select the two honorees based on assessments and recommendations of a jury.
"Amid the rapidly changing international situation, the role of global citizenship education has never been more important for respecting and helping understand universal human values," Ambassador and Permanent Delegate of the Republic of Korea to UNESCO Bak Sang Mee said. "Korea will keep cooperating with UNESCO to spread such education."
